Traditional Beliefs Associated with Laxmi Potli
Wealth and barkat
Include the potli in Lakshmi Puja when praying for prosperity and barkat (बरकत). You can pray for income, savings and enough food for family needs. On Dhanteras, devotees also worship Lord Kuber (कुबेर) alongside Maa Lakshmi.
Business progress and new beginnings
Include the potli in a shop opening puja or Diwali worship. Offer prayers for business progress and blessings before new work.
During Bahi Khata Puja (बही खाता पूजन), devotees worship their account books. The ceremony is also called Chopda Pujan (चोपड़ा पूजन). You can place the potli beside the books during Lakshmi-Ganesh puja.
Wisdom and removal of obstacles
Pray to Ganesh Ji for wisdom (बुद्धि) and removal of obstacles (बाधाएँ). Ask for blessings before starting new work or making important decisions.
Peace at home and welcoming Maa Lakshmi
Pray for peace at home (घर में शांति) during family worship. Lakshmi Charan (लक्ष्मी चरण) shows the footprints of Maa Lakshmi. You can use the footprints as a symbol of welcoming her into the home.
Practical Uses of Laxmi Potli
Several dry puja items in one pack
Buying puja samagri (पूजा सामग्री) together reduces separate purchases for the items you need. Satvikly Laxmi Potli contains 21 types of dry samagri. Contents vary between sellers; check the list for your ceremony.
The Satvikly set includes cowries (कौड़ी), Gomti Chakra (गोमती चक्र) and lotus seeds (कमल गट्टा). Akshat (अक्षत), or unbroken rice (साबुत चावल), is also included.
The Satvikly set does not supply everything needed for Lakshmi Puja. Arrange fresh flowers, fruit and food offerings (भोग) separately. You also need a diya, wicks and oil or ghee.
Preparing puja items before worship
Take out the items listed for the ceremony you plan. Arrange them on a clean, dry plate or thali (पूजा थाली). Put loose seeds, grains and spices in separate bowls.
Place any included Lakshmi-Ganesh symbol beside the murti (मूर्ति) or picture. Check quantities if several people will make offerings during the ceremony. Add more samagri if each person needs a separate portion.
Carrying puja items together
Pack small seeds, grains and spices in separate, sealed packets. Wrap any sharp-edged symbols before placing them inside the pouch. Pack Bhojpatra (भोजपत्र), a writing material made from birch bark, flat without folding.
Take the packed items to a shop or office ceremony. Carry fresh flowers and liquid offerings in separate containers. Protect the pouch from water to prevent the contents getting wet.
Puja gifts for family or colleagues
Choose a potli as a Diwali gift for someone who performs puja. Include a contents list with meanings for any unfamiliar items. Pack sweets and fresh flowers separately from the dry samagri.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Laxmi Potli compulsory for Lakshmi Puja?
No, you can gather the required samagri and symbols individually. Follow the material list for the ceremony you plan.
Can I use the potli again for another puja?
Yes, you can reuse unused dry samagri and undamaged symbols. Replace samagri that is damp, mouldy (फफूंद लगा हुआ) or insect-damaged. Check the symbols for damage before using them for another ceremony.
Does Satvikly Laxmi Potli include mantra chanting?
No, the standard Satvikly set does not include a mantra-chanting service. Abhimantrit (अभिमंत्रित) samagri is prepared through mantra chanting (मंत्र जप). Arrange mantra chanting separately if you want abhimantrit samagri.
