Families may follow a Vrat (व्रत) or worship an existing idol. Other families install a festival Murti at home. Sthapana (स्थापना) starts worship for the chosen festival days. Uttar Puja (उत्तर पूजा) ends worship before the final method.
Festival, Vrat, and Ganeshotsav
These three terms describe different festival parts. Each term has a separate use during Ganesh Puja:

Families follow Vratas from Puja books, home worship, and public Ganeshotsav. Each one uses different days, materials, duties, and final Puja. Some written Vratas end after the Panchami Parana. Other Vratas continue for months or years. Families may choose one day or many days under home custom.
Monthly Vinayaka Chaturthi, Sankashti Chaturthi, and Maghi Ganesh Jayanti are separate. Their Paksha (पक्ष), Tithi, Puja time, and food rules differ. Many texts record the main festival date. The full Puja method still differs across books and places.
A Chaturthi Vrat may last one day or many months. Some Vratas repeat each month for a fixed period. Udyapana (उद्यापन) ends a long Vrat with a full Puja.
A home Puja may use a festival Murti or home idol. The family chooses days it can worship each day. Murti material (मूर्ति सामग्री) decides the Snana and Visarjan method.
A public Mandal needs a strong stage, safe wiring, permits, and crowd control. Large idols need trained lifting teams and approved Visarjan plans. Home Puja steps cannot cover these public safety tasks.
What the Main Books Record
The books used here record Ganesh worship and Chaturthi Puja. Every book describes its own Puja form. Modern home worship uses ideas from several books. These books come from different times and printed editions. Scholars date the available Ganesha Purana to the medieval period (मध्यकाल). They view Ganapati Atharvashirsha as a later Upanishad text (उत्तरकालीन उपनिषद).
Mudgala Purana links Shukla Chaturthi with Madhyahna. The text links Krishna Chaturthi with Moonrise worship. Khanda 4 records a clay Murti and Panchami Parana (पंचमी पारण). The passage ends with water Visarjan for the clay Murti.
The passage records one short Bhadrapada festival method. It does not require every home to use the same period. Modern public customs need separate history records.
Check Which Vrat the Rule Belongs To
Check six points before using any Puja rule at home. Use every point before following any rule:
Puranas and Dharma Nibandha books include rules from different times. A birth story does not directly decide the festival date. Phalashruti (फलश्रुति) states the results promised inside that text.
Some texts promise Punya (पुण्य), wealth, or obstacle removal. Read those lines as promises inside the named text. Avoid medical, legal, business, marriage, or child-related promises.
Name the text, chapter, Vrat, and Puja step. Avoid broad claims such as ancient scripture records. A family custom can remain accepted when another text differs.
Choose the Puja Form Before Buying the Murti
Select the Puja form, period, and final method before buying. The following six answers control the full planning:
These answers affect Murti material, size, weight, Chowki, and Snana. They also affect Samagri, fresh Puja items, daily worship, and Visarjan. Home Visarjan needs a light natural clay Murti with safe colours. Public Visarjan needs safe lifting, enough vehicle space, and current city rules. A home idol remains in the home shrine. Confirm the Puja method before ordering any kit. One kit can never cover every local rite and fresh item.
Home, Temple, and Public Ganesh Puja
Use a Puja method made for the chosen place. Home, temple, and public Puja use different rules.
A family may perform home Puja alone or with a Pandit Ji. The family selects the Murti, period, daily worship, and final method. Home planning covers lamps, wires, water, children, pets, and safe movement space.
The temple controls timing, Puja items, and contact with the idol. The temple may limit touching, bathing, or dressing the idol.
Temple rules decide every Puja item and worship step. A temple shrine idol never follows festival Murti Visarjan rules.
Public Ganeshotsav needs a named team and trained workers. The team checks stage strength, safe wiring, fire safety, and permits. Large idols need lifting plans, vehicle support, crowd control, and city approval. Assign one person to make quick safety decisions. Household Puja materials cannot address those public duties.
Ganesh Chaturthi Puja Time and Muhurat
Ganesh Chaturthi falls on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi. Families perform the main Puja during local Madhyahna. The Tithi can start or end during any calendar date. The English calendar date changes at midnight. Tithi follows the Sun and Moon angle. Both can change during the same calendar day.
Madhyahna uses the daytime between local sunrise and sunset. The time never equals one national clock hour.
Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and London can show different Puja times. Nirnayasindhu selects Chaturthi when it meets local Madhyahna.
The texts use two Puja time markers. Shukla worship uses Madhyahna, while Krishna worship uses Moonrise.
Families outside India need a Panchang (पंचांग) for their local city. India clock times can produce the wrong calendar date overseas.
If the Madhyahna period passes, avoid an invented national fallback. Another suitable period can differ across family methods. Ask the Pandit Ji while the Tithi remains.
Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi marks the main Ganesh Chaturthi festival. Sankashti uses Krishna Paksha and Moonrise based worship.
Maghi Ganesh Jayanti is a separate local festival. Check its own yearly date and Puja time.
Festival Murti and Home Shrine Idol
A festival Murti and home shrine idol need separate Puja plans. The table separates both Puja forms before planning.
Mudgala Purana links a clay festival image with water Visarjan. Ganesha Purana lists a separate final step for a metal image. Narada Purana ends one golden image rite through a Guru gift. The Murti type controls the closing method. Water Visarjan never applies to every image of Ganesha. A home shrine idol may receive special Ganesh Chaturthi Puja. After the final prayers, regular home worship continues.
Never immerse an existing home shrine idol after Ganesh Chaturthi. Resume regular home worship after the final prayers.
Uttar Puja ends the selected festival worship. Water Visarjan then depends on material and local rules.
Choose the Ganpati Murti Before Sthapana
Select the Murti after fixing worship, lifting, and final use. Material and build decide Snana, safety, and water Visarjan.
A small natural clay Murti can suit an approved Visarjan method. Some cities also allow home Visarjan for safe clay Murtis. Choose a size that matches the planned water vessel. Check the paint, coating, glue, and internal frame. A clay look never proves that the full Murti uses natural clay.
Painted clay may lose colour after liquid contact. Use symbolic Snana when water can damage the surface.
Check the method with the maker and Pandit Ji. Avoid pouring Panchamrit (पंचामृत) before checking the Murti material.
Metal and stone home idols remain inside the shrine. Families may offer special festival Puja there. Regular shrine worship resumes after the final prayers.
Ask the maker about the following materials. Record every listed material before choosing the Visarjan method:

- chemical paint

Avoid home Visarjan when the material remains unknown. Choose an approved Visarjan site after checking its rules.
Check every visible point before the final purchase. Inspect the Murti from every visible side before purchase:
- full height and width
- total weight
- base strength
- cracks and damaged edges
- loose hands, crown, or ornaments
- flaking paint
- vehicle space
- doorway and lift width
- stair access
- Chowki size
- final movement space
Select another Murti when damage appears before purchase. After Sthapana, ask the family Pandit Ji before changing the Murti.
Place the Murti on a dry, strong Chowki that is easy to reach. Leave enough space for Puja and daily cleaning.
Continue the family direction already used at home. Do not promise wealth or harm from direction, trunk, colour, or posture.
Prepare the Puja Place Before Murti Arrival
Prepare the Chowki, Puja area, and space for moving the Murti. Early planning reduces unsafe lifting and late material changes.
Use a Chowki strong enough for the total Murti weight. Cover the strong Chowki with a clean cloth.
Leave room for the lamp, Puja Thali, bowls, and Puja items. The area needs dry flooring and easy daily access.
Place lamps away from curtains, paper, and direct fan air. Avoid too many plugs and exposed wires near water.
Plan for children and pets during every Puja. Place another vessel for old flowers and Durva.
Choose the people who will lift and move the Murti. Use a stable board when the base needs extra support.
Measure the vehicle, lift, doorway, and stairs. Protect the Murti from rain, heat, and sudden movement.
The Murti may arrive before Chaturthi under family custom. Place it safely and confirm the chosen Sthapana time. Assign one person to watch the full movement. Face covering, entrance rice, Aarti, chants, and welcome walks (शोभायात्रा) differ across families. Use those customs only where the family already follows them.
Ganpati Sthapana at Home
Families perform Avahana and festival Sthapana during home worship. A trained Pandit Ji performs full Prana Pratishtha through many Puja steps. These four terms describe different Puja actions. Each action has its own purpose and time:
A Sankalpa may name the person doing Puja, place, Tithi, and purpose. Gotra (गोत्र), date details, and Mantra wording differ across methods. One short online Mantra never equals full Prana Pratishtha. Festival worship also differs from full temple Prana Pratishtha.
Family members may perform a short home Puja under family custom. Call a Pandit Ji for Shodashopachara, Havan, long Mantras, or local Puja forms. An existing home idol needs no festival Sthapana. Offer special Puja and resume regular worship afterward.

Ganesh Chaturthi Puja Vidhi at Home
Ganesh Chaturthi Puja moves from Sankalpa to Avahana and Puja items. The Puja closes with Aarti, prayer, and Prasad (प्रसाद). The following short list helps with home Puja planning. Use one Mantra set from family custom or the Pandit Ji leading Puja.
A strong metal idol can receive a full liquid Snana. Painted clay may need flower-only Snana (प्रतीकात्मक स्नान).
A picture can receive symbolic Puja items during home Puja. Temporary Murti Visarjan rules never apply to a picture.

Daily Ganpati Puja After Sthapana
Sthapana occurs during the full first-day Puja. Daily Ganpati Puja uses a shorter home routine.

One family member may perform the daily Puja. Working families may choose the same morning or evening time.
No single rule requires two Aartis in every home. No rule requires Akhand Jyot (अखंड ज्योति) in every home.
Never leave a flame without an adult watching it. Remove spoiled offerings during every daily cleaning period.

Ganesh Chaturthi Vrat Food Rules
Ganesh Chaturthi Vrat food rules vary across named Vrat forms. A food rule from one Chaturthi may never apply elsewhere.
Some Vratas allow no food during the stated time. Krityakalpataru records sesame food and sesame water in one long Vrat.
Many families choose fruit, milk, or one Satvik meal. Mudgala Purana closes the reviewed Bhadrapada Vrat with Panchami Parana.
The Vrat period differs from the Murti worship period. One may end on Panchami while a separate festival form continues longer.
Health needs come before strict food rules. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and people taking medicine need medical advice.
How Long Can Ganpati Remain at Home
Home customs and Puja books show short and long periods. No single period applies to every home. The text section above records one Panchami ending and many longer Vratas. Those records do not rank one worship period above another. Families commonly choose one of these periods. Family custom controls the final period choice:
The public ten day festival remains a major modern form. It never becomes the only valid period. Choose the festival period before buying the Murti. Check family custom, daily Puja time, work, travel, space, and Murti weight. Also check older family needs, children, pets, and local Visarjan dates. Select a period the family can worship and close with respect.
Ganesh Chaturthi Moon Sighting
Ganesh Chaturthi custom asks families to avoid Moon sighting during a set time. The exact period changes across city, year, and Panchang method. Nirnayasindhu and a later Dharmasindhu claim use different rules. The printed Dharmasindhu rule still needs an exact check.
Vishnu Purana records the Syamantaka jewel account with Prasena, a lion, and Jambavan. The familiar verse appears inside that earlier story. Later Ganesh Chaturthi customs use the verse after someone sees the Moon. Families may also hear the Vrat Katha under their home method.
The yearly Ganesh Chaturthi page lists the city period. If someone sees the Moon, continue Puja without panic.
Avoid claims that one Moon sighting brings public shame or theft blame. Such claims create fear around a Puja custom.
Check a city Panchang for the annual Moon period. Continue the Puja calmly after seeing the Moon.
Uttar Puja and Ganpati Visarjan
Uttar Puja closes the chosen festival worship. Water Visarjan applies only to a safe festival Murti.
The final Puja may include the following steps. Follow one chosen order during the whole Puja:
- Remove old offerings from the Puja area.
- Offer final Naivedya.
- Perform Aarti.
- Offer prayer and respect.
- Invite Lord Ganesha to return again.
- Perform the closing Puja under family custom.
- Remove loose flowers and Puja decor.
Use one family or Pandit led order. Avoid mixing many online Mantra lists during the final Puja.
Mudgala Purana records a clay image taken to water. Ganesha Purana separates a metal image from a water Visarjan image.
Narada Purana directs a gift of the golden image. Together, these records connect Murti material with the closing method.
A natural clay festival Murti may enter water where the local body allows. A home metal or stone idol remains inside the shrine.
Unknown mixed material needs maker details and local office advice. Avoid home Visarjan without full material details.
Use home Visarjan only when every condition below applies. Missing one condition requires an approved public Visarjan:

Use an approved site for public Visarjan. Follow the entry time, waiting lines, and staff steps.
Lift the Murti with enough people and stable support. Avoid entering deep water without trained local support. Adults should watch children during the full visit.

Anant Chaturdashi marks the main final day of modern Ganeshotsav. The same date also has a separate Ananta Vrat for Vishnu. Both Pujas fall on one date but remain different.
How Public Ganeshotsav Grew
Household Ganesh worship came before the modern public festival. Many local people shaped the public festival during the 1800s.
History records Bhau Rangari and other Pune people. Research from Raminder Kaur shows Tilak was not the only early organiser.
Lokmanya Tilak used newspapers, speeches, and public groups from 1893 onward. Those efforts expanded public Mandals and political work.
Public Ganeshotsav added large stages, group funding, speeches, public walks, and Visarjan. Tilak played a major role without creating Ganesh worship.
Ganesh Chaturthi Across India
Indian families use different names, related Pujas, offerings, and festival periods. Local customs need their own names and material lists.
Which Ganesh Puja Rule Should Your Family Follow
