Where to Keep Laxmi Potli: Mandir, Locker or Shop

After Lakshmi Puja, you can choose the mandir, locker or shop. Use a locker or tijori if the Potli stays with money, jewellery or important papers. Leave it in the mandir if it remains part of regular puja. In a shop or office, use the main cash drawer, cash box, safe or a closed cabinet.

Pick one place and let it stay there. Move it only when you need to clean, shift or rearrange the space. Keep the pouch above floor level and away from dampness, water and direct flame.

Mandir or Locker: Which One Should You Choose?

The mandir works well when the Potli remains with your regular Lakshmi worship. A shelf or chowki gives it a separate place. Leave enough room so books, puja packets or heavy idols do not press on it. It does not need to touch the Lakshmi murti or photo.

Choose the locker or tijori when you want it to stay with valuables after puja. You do not need to move it from the mandir after a few days. Leave it where your household normally keeps it unless you follow another routine.

Neither place is automatically better. Choose the one where the pouch can remain dry and undisturbed.

Inside a Locker or Tijori

Give the pouch its own corner. It can stay with cash, jewellery and important financial or property papers.

It does not need to touch currency notes. It also does not have to sit above or below the money. Leave enough space so files or jewellery boxes do not press on it.

A wardrobe locker is fine when that is where you normally store valuables. Keep it away from footwear, damp clothes, cosmetics and leaking bottles.

Finish diya, dhoop, kapoor and aarti before placing it inside. Never light anything inside a closed locker or safe. Diwali fire-safety guidance also advises keeping diyas and candles away from material that can catch fire. Fire-safety guidance

In a Shop or Office

If your shop has a cash drawer or cash box, place the pouch toward the back or in a side compartment. That stops it being moved every time someone handles cash. Keep food packets, wet cleaning cloths and water bottles away from it.

A shop safe works like a home locker. If you do not use a safe or cash drawer, a closed cabinet or office drawer behind the counter works too. Store it there rather than leaving it loose on a customer-facing counter.

A UPI or card-based business does not need a traditional cash box. A business mandir, safe, drawer or cabinet can be used instead.

If you have several billing counters, one Potli in the main safe or primary cash area is enough. Add more only if that is already part of your business practice.

Does Direction Matter?

North is traditionally linked with Lord Kuber. This is why some homes prefer the north side for money-related puja items. Kubera is also identified as the Lord of Wealth and Regent of the North in museum records. Reference

Treat north as a preference, not a universal rule for every Laxmi Potli.

The position of a locker and the direction of a cloth pouch are different questions. Vastu advice may refer to where a safe stands or which way it opens. That does not create a rule for the Potli knot or opening.

You do not need to move a fixed locker only to reach the north side. If you already follow a Vastu rule at home, stay with that system instead of mixing several instructions.

The knot or mouth of the pouch does not need to face north or east unless your pandit or household practice says so.

After Diwali Puja

Finish Lakshmi Puja, aarti and diya first. Once those steps are complete, move the Potli to the mandir, locker, tijori or business safe.

If your home normally does this the next morning, continue that routine.

Opening the pouch depends on the product. Some Potlis contain items meant to be used during puja. Others are kept assembled. Read the instructions supplied with your Potli before opening it or removing anything.

For the Satvikly Laxmi Potli, use the handling instructions supplied with the product for opening, tying and storage.

How Long Can It Stay There?

There is no fixed one-year expiry rule for every Laxmi Potli. Some instructions keep the same pouch until the next Diwali, while other sacred items are kept longer.

If it stays dry and in good condition, follow the practice used at home. If the pouch gets wet, remove it from the mandir or locker and let it dry fully before putting it back.

You can move it while cleaning the mandir, changing lockers, moving house or rearranging a shop. Place it on a dry surface while you work, then return it when finished.

Places to Avoid

Avoid places where the pouch can get wet, dirty, crushed or repeatedly handled.

  • directly on the floor
  • near a toilet or bathroom
  • inside a damp drawer
  • near leaking water
  • beside household waste
  • under footwear
  • where people may step over it
  • next to an open flame
  • beneath heavy boxes or files
  • loose on a busy shop counter

If your home follows another placement rule, continue with that practice.

If You Have the Satvikly Laxmi Potli

The current Satvikly Laxmi Potli contains 21 devotional items. These include Shri Mahalakshmi Yantra, Kuber Yantra, Lakshmi Charan and Shrifal or Laghu Nariyal.

The same placement choices apply: mandir, locker or tijori, or a shop or office safe. A Kuber Yantra inside the pouch does not create a separate direction rule for the whole Potli.

Keep it away from moisture and direct flame. Use the Satvikly product instructions for opening, tying or taking individual items out during puja.

Common Questions

What if I do not have a locker at home?

A locker is not required. Use the mandir or a drawer or cabinet where you keep important puja or financial items. You do not need to buy a locker only for the Potli.

Can I keep Laxmi Potli in a bank locker?

Check your bank’s locker agreement first. Bank locker agreements can prohibit perishable materials, and a Laxmi Potli may contain natural seeds, spices or other puja items. For example, SBI’s current locker agreement excludes perishable material. Bank locker terms

A home mandir or locker is usually easier when you want the Potli to remain part of regular worship.

Can I keep one Potli at home and another in my shop?

Yes. You can keep one at home and another at your business if that matches how you use them. One pouch does not need to travel between both places every day.

What should I do with an old Laxmi Potli?

Do not put the complete Potli into household waste. First check which Yantras or sacred items can remain in your mandir or locker. Follow your temple, pandit or household practice for the remaining materials.

Do not immerse the complete Potli in a river or other water body. Current National Mission for Clean Ganga directions prohibit immersion of puja material and other religious offerings in rivers and other water bodies. Environmental guidance

Once you choose the mandir, locker or business safe, let the pouch remain there unless you need to move it. Keep it away from moisture, heavy objects and open flame.
