Is Dhanteras on 6 or 7 November 2026?
Dhanteras is on 6 November. Trayodashi begins that morning and ends before noon the next day.
Trayodashi remains present after sunset, so Lakshmi–Kubera puja is observed this evening.
Trayodashi ends at 10:47 AM, before the evening worship period begins.
On 6 November, Trayodashi is present during the evening. On 7 November, it ends before the evening begins. So, although the tithi covers parts of both dates, the evening puja is on 6 November.
Why Does One Tithi Cover Parts of Two Dates?
A tithi (तिथि) is a day in the Hindu lunar calendar. Its start and end depend on the positions of the Sun and Moon.
Your calendar date changes at midnight, but a tithi can change at any hour. A tithi that begins one morning may end the following morning.
Why Does Puja Start After Pradosh Begins?
The evening muhurat above covers the time when Trayodashi, Pradosh Kaal and Vrishabha Lagna occur together. Pradosh may begin before Vrishabha Lagna starts.
Pradosh Kaal (प्रदोष काल) is the early evening after sunset. Vrishabha Lagna (वृषभ लग्न) is the time when Taurus (वृषभ राशि) rises on the eastern horizon.
Vrishabha is one of the fixed Lagnas (स्थिर लग्न) favoured for Lakshmi puja. You do not need a Taurus birth sign to worship during this time.
In New Delhi, Pradosh begins at 5:33 PM. Vrishabha Lagna begins at 6:02 PM, which is 29 minutes later. The puja muhurat therefore starts at 6:02 PM.
Vrishabha Lagna ends at 7:57 PM, while Pradosh continues until 8:09 PM. Those remaining 12 minutes are outside the puja muhurat in the table.
Why Can the Puja Muhurat End Before Vrishabha Lagna Ends?
The puja muhurat covers the time when Pradosh and Vrishabha Lagna overlap. Depending on your city, either one may end first.
In Bengaluru, Pradosh ends at 8:20 PM, while Vrishabha Lagna continues until 8:28 PM. The puja muhurat ends at 8:20 PM because Pradosh ends first. Do not add those eight minutes to the puja time.
Why Do Puja Timings Differ Between Cities?
Trayodashi starts and ends at the same time across these Indian cities. However, sunset and Lagna timings change with location.
For example, the evening puja starts at 5:08 PM in Guwahati and 6:35 PM in Mumbai. Both cities use IST, but the local sunset and Lagna times differ.
Use the muhurat for the city where you will worship. A later end time in another city does not extend your local puja time.
Guwahati
5:08–7:05 PMMumbai
6:35–8:35 PMWhen Should You Light the Yama Deepak?
When
During local Pradosh on 6 November, as evening turns to night.
Where
Place the oil lamp outside the home entrance according to your family custom.
Which timing
Check the local Yama Deepam entry; do not automatically use the Lakshmi–Kubera table.
Light the Yama Deepak (यम देव के लिए दीपक) during Pradosh on 6 November. Place the oil lamp outside your home entrance as evening turns to night. This offering is called Yama Deepdan (यम दीपदान).
You do not need to wait until midnight. For an exact local time, check the Yama Deepam or Yama Deepdan entry in your city Panchang. The Lakshmi–Kubera timings above should not automatically be used for this offering.
Yama Deepdan and Yama Tarpan (यम देव को जल अर्पित करना) are different rituals. Offer the lamp on Trayodashi. If your family also offers water to Yama, check the separate Chaturdashi (चौदहवीं तिथि) timing for that ritual.
Why Do Calendars Use Both Kartik and Ashwin for Dhanteras?
Kartik Krishna Trayodashi and Ashwin Krishna Trayodashi can refer to the same Dhanteras day. Krishna Paksha (कृष्ण पक्ष) is the part of the lunar month leading up to Amavasya.
The month name depends on how the calendar counts each month:
A different month name alone does not indicate a different festival date. Check the tithi and calendar date together.
Is the Gold-Buying Muhurat the Same as the Puja Muhurat?
A gold-buying muhurat (सोना खरीदने का शुभ समय) is for purchases. It may cover different hours from the evening Lakshmi–Kubera puja.
Before planning your visit to a shop, check the city, date and purchase timings. Buying gold during a shopping muhurat does not change the evening puja time.
Questions About Dhanteras Puja Timings
Does the Evening Muhurat Also Apply to Dhanvantari Puja?
+−
The evening timings above are for Lakshmi–Kubera worship. Check Dhanvantari Puja (धन्वंतरि पूजा) separately before choosing its time. Do not assume both pujas share the same hours.
What if Two Panchangs Differ by a Few Minutes?
+−
First match the city, year, time zone and puja name. Check that both show the puja muhurat. One may show the full Pradosh period instead.
Calculation choices can also affect the time. For example, including the height of a location above sea level can change the calculated sunset.
Follow one Panchang accepted in your family tradition. Do not combine the start time from one Panchang with the end time from another.
Can I Do the Evening Puja as Soon as Trayodashi Begins?
+−
Trayodashi begins at 10:30 AM on 6 November, but that is the tithi start time. The evening puja muhurat also depends on Pradosh and Vrishabha Lagna. Use the city table when planning that puja.
What if I Cannot Worship During the Evening Muhurat?
+−
Ask your family priest about another time for the puja you follow. Share your city and the hours when you can worship so the alternative suits your location and puja tradition.
Can I Use These Timings Outside India?
+−
Check a Panchang for the city where you will worship. Converting an Indian time into another time zone does not account for local sunset.
Confirm the festival date as well as the puja time. Both must be checked for your location.
